Active Release TECHNIQUES

What is it?

ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUES (A.R.T.®) is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that diagnoses and treats soft tissue injuries.  Soft tissue refers primarily to muscle, tendon, fascia and nerves.  It is a non-invasive healing procedure that locates and breaks down scar tissue and adhesions.  Injuries can be a result of trauma, such as whiplash, repetitive strains, tissue hypoxia, and joint dysfunction.

How is it performed?

Whenever possible the patient performs active movements during the treatment process. Active motions stimulate neurological pathways in the spinal cord that help to reduce pain during treatment. Motion also helps to reproduce the stresses the patient will actually be under during normal active motion.

ART is actually a combination of examination and treatment.  The provider uses a method of healing injuries by locating scar tissue, then applying tension to the scar tissue while lengthening muscles, tendons and ligaments. ART returns tissue to its correct tension, texture, movement and function thus eliminating symptoms.  Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

These treatment protocols - over 500 specific moves - are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.  ART is unique to each individual – treatment and the specific moves incorporated depend on the evaluation results of the patient.

Each session takes between 8 to 30 minutes and comfort level varies by each individual. At times ART can be described as mildly uncomfortable but the therapeutic benefits easily outweigh any tenderness felt during a treatment.

Who should consider ART?

ART is a highly successful treatment for anyone who leads an active life, sits at a computer all day, or enjoys gardening. Many daily activities cause repetitive stress and the formation of scar tissue, which hinders the movement and function of soft tissues. This creates symptoms such as pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, numbness and weakness.

If you suffer from any of the following, ART may be the solution for you:
